When must I fulfill my CPD requirements?

Section 3105.E of the Rules requires that registrants verify their compliance with the CPD requirements at the end of each renewal period, i.e., each time the license is renewed.

The renewal invoice contains a certification that must be signed before the renewal payment will be accepted.

What courses qualify for CPD?

The Board approves "Sponsors/Providers" of CPD activities; however, the Board does not approve particular courses or activities. A course or activity does not have to be presented by an "Board-Approved" sponsor/provider for the registrant to claim credit for the course or activity.

It is your responsibility to determine if the activity meets your CPD needs and to maintain documentation adequate to support your decision to claim credit for the particular activity.

You may claim PDH credits only for activities which conform to the definition of "Acceptable Activity" as defined in Section 3103 of the Rules of the Board — "subject matter which is technical in nature or addresses business management practices, professional ethics, quality assurance, codes or other similar topics which facilitate the registrant's professional development as a professional engineer or professional land surveyor, and/or serves to safeguard life, health, property and promote the public welfare"

These activities should advance the professional or technical competence of the registrant. See "General Requirements" in the Instructions for PE and PLS CPD Verification in Louisiana

If we know of any current CPD activities available, we post it.

Can I claim credit for a correspondence course or a video taped course?

If the fact that you completed the course can be independently verified, then correspondence, distance learning, or video courses are allowed. The fact  that you purchased the course is not adequate.

For example, if you must take and pass a examination to successfully complete the course and that examination is graded and maintained (kept on file) by the course-provider, the fact that you completed the course is independently verifiable.

Can I carry over four PDH in professional ethics that I earned in the previous biennial renewal period?

Yes and No. You can carry over a maximum of 15 PDH from a previous biennial renewal period; however, in required categories such as ethics, life safety code, minimum standards, etc., the number of PDH carried over in the particular required category may not exceed the minimum PDH required in that particular category.

Suppose you earned four PDH in professional ethics. You apply one PDH in ethics to satisfy your current biennial requirement. You could carry over only one ethics PDH (the minimum requirement) into the next period's ethics category. The remaining two excess PDH in ethics could be applied in the general category of "PE" or "PLS" (on your PDH Activity Log).

Is a Three-Semester-Hour College Course valued at 45 PDH or 135 PDH?

Section 3113. states that "One college or unit semester hour  =  45 PDH"; therefore, if a college credits you with three (3) semester hours for a particular course those three semester hours provide you with 135 PDH (3 x 45 = 135).

I am a Civil Engineer living and working overseas! How can I fulfill the 30-hour CPD requirement, much less the requirement for 8 PDH in Life Safety Code, building codes, or Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines?

If you are NOT designing buildings or building systems in Louisiana, insure that you meet the overall requirement for 30 PDH and request an exemption from those specific 8 PDH under the provisions of Section 3109.3 (extenuating circumstances). Be prepared to verify that you were out of the country during the period in question and present the Board-approved exemption if you are selected for an audit.

What exactly do you mean by an engineer who "designs building and/or building systems" and must meet the special requirement for 8 PDH?

When an engineer is considered the "professional of record", and/or signs and seals all or any part of a set of plans that may be submitted for approval to any agency such as the Office of the Fire Marshall. then the 8 PDH in Life Safety Code, building codes, and/or ADA Accessibility Guidelines are required.  The key terms are "professional of record" and "signing and sealing plans".
